    What is Asymptomatic Bacteriuria?<\/h3>\n

    The term “asymptomatic bacteriuria” refers to the presence of a colony of bacteria<\/strong> (>100,000 per mL of urine) in the urine, in the total absence of acute signs or symptoms<\/strong> actually perceptible.<\/p>\n

    Its presence depends on several factors such as age, sex, and other medical conditions. However, it is generally more frequent in pregnant women<\/strong>, children<\/strong> , and older people<\/strong> (especially those with diabetes) who have tumors in the urinary tract or use catheters.<\/p>\n

    The amount of bacteria involved can increase over time, leading the person’s immune system to eventually react and exhibit the typical symptoms of cystitis.
    \nIn other cases, the amount and type of bacteria remains constant over time, remaining harmless.<\/p>\n

    Why Are Bacteriuria Symptoms Absent?<\/em><\/p>\n

    The bacteria that colonize the urine, generating the so-called asymptomatic bacteriuria, often remain harmless for three possible reasons:<\/p>\n

    1. They are not pathogens
      \n<\/strong>It could be a type of bacteria unable to adhere to the walls of the bladder, which excludes the possibility of inflammation of the same and the development of the infection that leads to the phenomenon of cystitis proper.
      \nBecause they do not adhere to the bladder, these bacteria are expelled when you pee.
      \nDespite this, their quantity is maintained constant in the urine due to their reproductive capacity.<\/li>\n
    2. Immune System Support
      \n<\/strong>A healthy immune system is able to deter pathogenic bacteria from attacking the bladder walls. This effectively rules out the development of the infection and subsequent symptoms.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        There are people who live months or years with asymptomatic bacteriuria without realizing it or facing any negative repercussions on their health.<\/p>\n

        Bacteriuria, in fact, is not a phenomenon on which it is necessary to intervene with antibiotic therapy<\/strong>, precisely because it is our own immune system, or the non-pathogenic nature of the bacteria, which guarantees its harmlessness.
        \nMoreover, taking antibiotics in these specific cases will only lead to the development of bacterial resistance and alter the balance of both vaginal and intestinal bacterial flora.
        \nIt is these imbalances that facilitate the proliferation of real pathogenic bacteria and an increased risk of urinary tract infection.<\/p>\n
