Cystitis means inflammation of the bladder.<\/p>\n<p>A person with hemorrhagic cystitis will then suffer from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dimann.com\/en\/magazine-en\/cystitis-frequent-symptoms-in-detail\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the typical symptoms of bladder inflammation<\/a> and notice the presence of blood in the urine.<\/p>\n<p>You should know that there are four types, or grades, depending on the amount of blood in the urine:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Grade I<\/strong>: microscopic bleeding (not visible);<\/li>\n<li><strong>Grade II<\/strong>: there is visible hemorrhage;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Grade III<\/strong>: bleeding with small clots;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Grade IV<\/strong>: is bleeding with clots large enough to block the flow of urine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Read also: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dimann.com\/en\/magazine-en\/how-to-cure-cystitis-in-a-natural-way\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How to treat cystitis naturally with D-mannose<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Possible causes of hemorrhagic cystitis<\/h3>\n<p>Earlier we mentioned that hemorrhagic cystitis is defined by lower urinary tract symptoms that include <strong>hematuria and irritation during urination<\/strong>. It results from damage to the bladder transitional epithelium and blood vessels caused by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>toxins;<\/li>\n<li>pathogens;<\/li>\n<li>radiation;<\/li>\n<li>drugs;<\/li>\n<li>diseases.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But let&#8217;s go in order.<\/p>\n<p>Generally speaking, <strong>infectious causes of hemorrhagic cystitis<\/strong> include bacteria and viruses.<\/p>\n<p>As for <strong>noninfectious hemorrhagic cystitis<\/strong>, however, the causes are generally due to pelvic radiation and chemotherapy.<\/p>\n<p>As we anticipated earlier, there are different degrees of hemorrhagic cystitis, which can be <strong>asymptomatic microscopic or with gross hematuria and clots<\/strong>, resulting in urinary retention.<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, treatment depends on the severity of bleeding and symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>Infections can also cause hemorrhagic cystitis, but these causes are <strong>less serious, do not last long, and are easier to treat<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Hemorrhagic cystitis: treatment and prevention<\/h3>\n<p>Timely treatment of hemorrhagic cystitis is important for two main reasons:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>reduce pain;<\/li>\n<li>Prevent long-lasting damage to the bladder.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>As we have said, treatment options vary greatly depending on the <strong>cause and severity of each case<\/strong>. In any case, treatment of hemorrhagic cystitis may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Drainage of the bladder<\/strong> through a catheter (tube) into a bag outside the body;<\/li>\n<li>in case you are undergoing a course of chemotherapy, doctors might suggest <strong>an alternative chemotherapy<\/strong> or a lower dose;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Clot evacuation<\/strong> via catheter or cystoscopy to remove clots from the bladder;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Continuous bladder irrigation<\/strong>, which injects fluids into the bladder to flush it;<\/li>\n<li><strong>intravenous fluids<\/strong> to increase urine output and flush the bladder;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Taking antibiotics<\/strong> to treat bacterial infections or antivirals to fight viruses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Rarely do people with hemorrhagic cystitis need blood transfusions to replace heavy blood loss or surgery.<\/p>\n<p>What is important is that as soon as you notice the presence of blood in your urine, you should immediately contact your doctor. In this way, the root of the problem can be solved without running into unpleasant consequences.<\/p>\n<p>At this point, however, the question arises: <strong>how to prevent hemorrhagic cystitis<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p>Some of these rules apply to all types of cystitis, regardless of whether it is hemorrhagic or not.<\/p>\n<p>First, you should try to <strong>drink plenty of water-at<\/strong> least two and a half liters a day. If you are not used to it it might be difficult at first, but you will see that with time it will become practically automatic.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ve probably heard that blueberry juice is a great ally for prevention. Here, let&#8217;s dispel this myth: it is a real urban legend, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dimann.com\/en\/magazine-en\/blueberry-cystitis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in this in-depth discussion I explain more about why<\/a>.
