But did you ever imagine that this disease could also affect the symptoms of cystitis?<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s find out together the connection between Covid-19 and cystitis in this article.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"md-end-block md-heading\">Cystitis and Covid-19: here&#8217;s how the two are related<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"md-end-block md-heading\"><span class=\"md-plain\">What is the relationship between Covid-19 and cystitis?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"md-end-block md-p\"><span class=\"md-plain\">Covid-associated cystitis is the result of Covid-19 infection, which, in this specific case, involves the urinary tract.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"md-end-block md-p\"><span class=\"md-plain\">How?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"md-end-block md-p\"><span class=\"md-plain\">Causing <strong>the typical symptoms of cystitis<\/strong>, such as frequent urge to pee, feeling like you have never emptied your bladder, etc. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"md-end-block md-p\"><span class=\"md-plain\">But how was it discovered?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"md-end-block md-p\"><span class=\"md-plain\">In the early days of the pandemic, some German urologists were the first to describe the sudden onset of urinary symptoms in patients with Covid-19. They shared\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"md-meta-i-c md-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7236674\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"md-plain\">an unusual case of a patient admitted to the hospital<\/span><\/a> <\/span><span class=\"md-plain\">who reported <\/span><span class=\"md-pair-s \"><strong><span class=\"md-plain\">fever, chills, pain, urgency, and increased urinary symptoms<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span class=\"md-plain\">, although there were no signs of a typical bacterial urinary tract infection. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"md-end-block md-p md-focus\"><span class=\"md-plain\">A swab taken on the same day revealed <\/span><span class=\"md-pair-s\"><strong><span class=\"md-plain\">Covid-19 infection. <\/span><\/strong><\/span><span class=\"md-plain\">The researchers therefore sought to determine whether this occurred in other patients and found that <\/span><span class=\"md-pair-s \"><strong><span class=\"md-plain\">a small but significant number <\/span><\/strong><\/span><span class=\"md-plain md-expand\">of patients admitted for Covid had increased urinary symptoms. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"md-end-block md-p\"><span class=\"md-plain\">Shortly thereafter, researchers at several Michigan medical centers initially found 39 patients with Covid-19 (32 men and 7 women) who\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"md-meta-i-c md-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7524562\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"md-plain\">had developed urinary symptoms and whose urine cultures had revealed no bacterial infection<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"md-end-block md-p\"><span class=\"md-plain\">The results?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"md-end-block md-p\"><span class=\"md-plain\">85% of these patients had <\/span><span class=\"md-pair-s \"><strong><span class=\"md-plain\">problems with increased urinary frequency and nocturnal urination more than four times per night<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span class=\"md-plain\">. Next, they completed a larger study that identified 350 patients with de novo OAB symptoms (De novo <\/span><span class=\"md-pair-s \"><strong><span class=\"md-plain\">OverActive Bladder<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span class=\"md-plain\">, or more simply <\/span><span class=\"md-pair-s \"><strong><span class=\"md-plain\">overactive bladder syndrome<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span class=\"md-plain\">) worsening 10 to 14 weeks after hospitalization due to Covid.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Read also: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dimann.com\/en\/magazine-en\/how-to-sleep-with-cystitis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How to sleep more soundly with cystitis: yes, it really is possible<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"md-end-block md-heading\"><span class=\"md-plain\">Covid-19 vaccines and cystitis: case study from the Journal of Clinical Medicine<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"md-end-block md-p\"><span class=\"md-plain\">According to\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"md-meta-i-c md-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35628863\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"md-plain\">a study published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine<\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"md-plain\">, the Covid-19 vaccines from <\/span><span class=\"md-pair-s\"><strong><span class=\"md-plain\">Astrazeneca, Moderna and Pfizer <\/span><\/strong><\/span><span class=\"md-plain\">were associated with significant worsening of lower urinary tract symptoms and greater detected change in urinary frequency and urgency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"md-end-block md-p\"><span class=\"md-plain\">The study, which included 889 participants, 586 of whom received vaccines from AstraZeneca-Oxford, 260 from Pfizer-BioNTech, and 89 from Moderna, found that <\/span><span class=\"md-pair-s\"><strong><span class=\"md-plain\">13.4 percent of the participants showed worsening of their existing urinary infection <\/span><\/strong><\/span><span class=\"md-plain\">after receiving the coronavirus vaccine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"md-end-block md-p\"><span class=\"md-plain\">According to the report, the most frequent adverse effects were:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul-list\" data-mark=\"-\">\n<li class=\"md-list-item\">\n<p class=\"md-end-block md-p\"><span class=\"md-plain\">urinary urgency;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"md-list-item\">\n<p class=\"md-end-block md-p\"><span class=\"md-plain\">The frequency to urinate;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"md-list-item\">\n<p class=\"md-end-block md-p\"><span class=\"md-plain\">nocturia-that is, the frequent urge to pee during the nighttime hours;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"md-list-item\">\n<p class=\"md-end-block md-p\"><span class=\"md-plain\">urinary incontinence.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"md-end-block md-p\"><span class=\"md-plain\">These are similar to the symptoms of overactive bladder syndrome (OAB) that I mentioned earlier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"md-end-block md-p\"><span class=\"md-plain\">Although further prospective studies are needed to <\/span><span class=\"md-pair-s \"><strong><span class=\"md-plain\">Demonstrate the causal association between the vaccine and urinary symptoms after vaccination<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span class=\"md-plain\">, scientists from the Graduate Institute of Clinical Medicine at Kaohsiung Medical University in Taiwan suggest closely monitoring LUTS (English acronym for <\/span><span class=\"md-pair-s \"><strong><span class=\"md-plain\">Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span class=\"md-plain\">, i.e., a cluster of lower urinary tract symptoms) after Covid-19 vaccination, especially in those who already suffered from symptoms of overactive bladder, and to seek medical attention if necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"md-end-block md-heading\"><span class=\"md-plain\">But in the end-why did so many people suffer from cystitis during the pandemic?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"md-end-block md-p\"><span class=\"md-plain\">Leaving aside for a moment the case studies and research conducted by scientists&#8211;why<strong> did so many women complain of cystitis symptoms<\/strong> during the lockdown?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"md-end-block md-p\"><span class=\"md-plain\">Actually, there is a very specific reason that I will now explain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"md-end-block md-p\"><span class=\"md-plain\">I know it has been a while since the &#8216;reclusion&#8217;
